Lesson Outline (30 minutes)

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Engage pupils with a story: “Imagine you have 5 apples in one basket. How can we share these apples into smaller groups?”
  • Use the illustrated poster to visually introduce the terms “whole” and “part.”
  • Briefly explain that today they will explore how a number can be made of smaller groups.
  • Ask a few children to demonstrate with counters what they think “whole” and “part” mean.

2. Main Activity: Partner Work Exploring Counters (15 minutes)

  • Grouping: Children form pairs and receive 10 counters and a tray each.
  • Task: “Make one whole group of counters, then split the group into two smaller parts in different ways. How many can you put in one part? How many in the other?”
  • Encourage pupils to discuss what they are doing with their partner, prompting with questions like:
    • “How many counters are in the whole group?”
    • “Can you make a different part and still keep the same whole?”
    • “Which part has more or less?”
