Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (10 minutes)
Objective: Activate prior knowledge and engage students with familiar concepts.
Activity:
- Present 5 quick-fire questions on the board (e.g., "What is 50% as a fraction and a decimal?")
- Each student writes answers on mini whiteboards.
- Discuss each answer briefly, highlighting misconceptions.

2. Introducing Concepts (15 minutes)
Objective: Explain the links between percentages, decimals and fractions.
Input:
- Use a visual diagram on the board showing the three forms connected by arrows (e.g., ½ = 0.5 = 50%).
- Demonstrate step-by-step conversions:
- Fraction → Decimal (divide numerator by denominator)
- Decimal → Percentage (multiply by 100)
- Percentage → Fraction (write over 100 and simplify)
- Emphasise common equivalent values (e.g., ¼ = 0.25 = 25%).
Engagement strategy:
- Use real-life examples, e.g., "If you eat 20% of a chocolate bar, what fraction and decimal is that?"
- Encourage choral responses to scaffold learning.
3. Consolidation Task (20 minutes)
Objective: Practice conversions in varied and practical contexts.
Activities:
- Matching Game: Students work in pairs with prepared cards showing fractions, decimals, and percentages. They must match equivalent forms. pairs discuss their reasoning aloud.
- Problem-solving: Each pair receives 3 real-life problem cards (e.g., calculate discounts, convert recipe quantities). They write full solutions showing all three forms.
- Circulate to provide prompts and challenge deeper reasoning, e.g., “Why does converting 0.75 to a fraction give 3/4 and how do you check it?”
Differentiation: Provide scaffolded hints or fraction equivalence tables for those needing support; extension task - convert recurring decimals to fractions.
4. Reflection and Discussion (10 minutes)
Objective: Deepen understanding through articulation and justification of concepts.
Discussion prompts:
- What is the easiest form to work with and why?
- How do fractions, decimals and percentages help us in everyday life?
- Which conversions were tricky and how did you solve them?
Activity: Use Stop-Think-Pair-Share to promote all voices:
- Students write one insight on sticky notes, pair up to discuss, then share highlights with the class.
5. Exit Ticket (5 minutes)
Objective: Assess immediate understanding and identify areas needing review.
Task:
Each student writes on a sticky note:
- One full conversion (fraction ↔ decimal ↔ percentage) of their choice, OR
- One question about something they found confusing.
Collect notes to review before next lesson.
