Context

This is Lesson 4 out of 4 in the Year 7 unit Music for Special Occasions. Over previous lessons, students collaborated to compose original football anthems, focusing on musical elements such as rhythm, melody, and lyrics. This final lesson centres on performance skills, peer evaluation, and reflective learning, aligning closely with the National Curriculum for Music at Key Stage 3.

Lesson Structure (45 minutes)

1. Starter (5 minutes)

• Quick warm-up: simple rhythmic clapping or vocal warm-up to prepare voices and focus attention.
• Recap learning from previous lessons: briefly review key features of their football anthems (melody, rhythm, lyrics).

2. Group Rehearsal (10 minutes)

• Groups rehearse their football anthem, focusing on accuracy, clarity, and expression.
• Teacher circulates, providing targeted support, offering rehearsal advice, and encouraging confident leadership roles among more advanced learners.
• Groups needing extra help are offered additional rehearsal time or simplified parts to encourage participation.

3. Performances (20 minutes)

• Each group performs their anthem to the class (approx. 4 minutes per group including feedback time).
• Encourage clear posture, eye contact, and appropriate dynamics to engage the audience.
• Use a performance checklist aligned with success criteria for self and peer observation.

4. Peer Review & Reflection (8 minutes)

• After each performance, peers give constructive feedback using sentence starters like: – “I really liked how you…” – “A way to improve might be…” – “Next time, you could try to…”
• Teacher models constructive feedback language to ensure positivity and helpfulness.
• Students record key points from peer feedback in their musical journals.

5. Plenary & Extension Introduction (2 minutes)

• Reflect together on what went well and personal learning points.
• Introduce extension task: students interested in further challenge can create a short multimedia presentation to accompany their anthem. This could include images, lyrics, or video clips related to the football occasion, enhancing the performance experience for a future school event or showcase.
