Overview

This 60-minute lesson is the second of five in the "Exploring Ancient Egypt" unit for Year 3 pupils. National Curriculum Links

  • History - Key Stage 2
    • Pupils should develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time.

    • They should use a range of sources to ask and answer questions about the past.
    • Reference: National Curriculum in England: History programmes of study, Key Stage 2.
  • Learning objectives aligned to the curriculum for Year 3:
    • Describe significant individuals from the past (Pharaohs).
    • Understand the significance of the pharaoh’s role as political and religious leader.
    • Use historical terms appropriately such as dynasty, pharaoh, reign, tomb, and legacy.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  1. Identify who the pharaohs were and name some famous ones (e.g. Tutankhamun, Ramses II, Cleopatra).
  2. Explain the dual role of the pharaoh as both a political ruler and a religious leader.
  3. Describe some of the achievements and symbols of pharaonic power, including pyramids and temples.
  4. Use simple timelines to place pharaohs in chronological order within Ancient Egypt.

Materials Needed

  • Picture cards of famous pharaohs and their artefacts
  • Simplified timeline of Ancient Egypt rulers
  • Large laminated image of an Egyptian temple or pyramid
  • Pupil exercise book or worksheet
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Role-play props (crowns, sceptres, collars)
  • Smartboard or projector (for images/videos)

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Starter discussion:
    • Ask pupils: “Who was a pharaoh? What do you think they did?”
    • Show images of a pharaoh’s crown, sceptre, and the pyramids. Discuss what these objects might tell us about their power.
  • Learning intent: Clearly explain the lesson’s purpose — to explore who pharaohs were and why they were important.

2. Teaching Input (15 minutes)

  • Mini-presentation:
    • Introduce 3 famous pharaohs: Tutankhamun (known for his tomb), Ramses II (famous for building temples and statues), and Cleopatra (last pharaoh and political leader).
    • Explain the pharaoh’s dual role: as a king who ruled the country AND as a god’s representative on Earth. Highlight key symbols of power such as the double crown, the crook and flail, and large building projects like pyramids.
  • Visual aid: Use a timeline to place the pharaohs in order, helping build historical context. Pupils copy timeline into exercise books.

3. Guided Activity (15 minutes)

  • Role-play:
    • Divide class into small groups of 5. Assign each group a pharaoh with props.
    • Pupils act out roles showing how a pharaoh might rule – making decisions, leading religious ceremonies, and overseeing building projects.
    • Encourage use of key vocabulary (pharaoh, dynasty, reign, god-king).
  • Class discussion: Groups briefly share what they learned about how their pharaoh used power.

4. Independent Work (10 minutes)

  • Worksheet activity:
    • Complete a matched picture-and-caption sheet connecting pharaohs, their symbols, and achievements.
    • Short written task: Pupils write 2-3 sentences describing why being both a religious and political leader made pharaohs powerful.

5. Plenary & Assessment (10 minutes)

  • Think, pair, share: Pupils discuss with a partner one interesting fact about pharaohs they learned. Share with the class.
  • Quiz: Quick oral quiz on key vocabulary and facts from the lesson.
  • Exit ticket: Pupils write on a sticky note one way pharaohs showed they were powerful. Collect for formative assessment.

Differentiation

  • Provide sentence starters and word banks for pupils who need writing support.
  • Challenge more able pupils with an extension question: “Why do you think pharaohs wanted to be seen as gods?”
  • Offer visual aids, props, and concrete materials for pupils with additional learning needs.

Cross-curricular Links

  • Art & Design: Examine hieroglyphs and create a simple cartouche with the pupil’s name in hieroglyphs (to be continued in a later lesson).
  • English: Develop vocabulary and sentence writing skills related to historical figures and concepts.
  • Religious Education: Highlight the importance of gods in Ancient Egyptian society for understanding the pharaoh’s religious role.

Teacher Reflection Notes (Post-lesson)

  • Were pupils able to discuss the dual roles clearly?
  • Did role-play help pupils empathise with the pharaoh’s perspective?
  • Were learning objectives met, and what evidence supports this?
  • How effective was the timeline activity in placing historical figures chronologically?
  • Consider introducing more artefact-based enquiry next lesson to deepen understanding.

This lesson plan blends engaging, active learning with explicit historical enquiry and vocabulary development, all tightly mapped to the National Curriculum. Its creative role-play and timeline use offer memorable, hands-on experiences ideal for Year 3 learners.
