Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (10 minutes)
Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and engage interest.
- Begin with a question to the class: "What parts can you see on a plant?"
- Display a large image of a flowering plant on the board.
- As children call out answers, jot them on the board without correcting or confirming immediately.
- Use flashcards to introduce correct terms: roots, stem, leaves, flowers.
- Ask the class to repeat the words aloud together, encouraging clear pronunciation.
Differentiation:
- For children who find recalling vocabulary hard, provide visual prompts and help them match words to parts.
2. Interactive Teaching & Discussion (15 minutes)
Purpose: Teach functions of each plant part interactively.
- Show labelled diagram of a flowering plant.
- Explain each part and its function using everyday analogies to aid understanding:
- Roots are like straws that suck up water and food from the soil.
- Stem is like a highway where water and nutrients travel through, plus it holds the plant up straight.
- Leaves are like the plant’s kitchen, making food with sunlight (introduce simple photosynthesis concept).
- Flowers are the plant’s way of making seeds to grow new plants.
- Use real plants with magnifying glasses so children can see each part closely in small groups (approx. six groups).
- Encourage questions and prompt children to describe what they see and what they think the parts do.
Cross-curricular link: Use scientific vocabulary correctly to build language skills.
3. Hands-on Activity – “Build A Plant” (20 minutes)
Purpose: Reinforce knowledge by creating a labelled plant model.
- In pairs, children receive cut-outs representing roots, stem, leaves, and flower petals (different coloured paper).
- Using glue, assemble a plant on a poster sheet.
- Label each part and write a short sentence describing its function (sentence stems can be provided for support, e.g., “The roots...”)
- Circulate to support and extend understanding.
Extension: Challenge able learners to write an extra fact about their plant part or to explain why the plant could not survive without it.
4. Plenary and Assessment (10 minutes)
Purpose: Check understanding and reinforce learning.
- Use mini-whiteboards for a quick quiz: show a part of the plant on the board and ask children to write the name or function.
- Call on individual students to explain one plant part aloud, reinforcing scientific language.
- Recap the basic functions, praising accurate use of vocabulary.
- Highlight how all plant parts are important and work together to keep the plant alive and healthy.
