Overview
In this 60-minute practical session, students will develop and sketch initial ideas for a new media product. This lesson focuses on creative exploration and refinement of concepts through handwritten and visual brainstorming, aligned to the National Curriculum for England’s Media Studies and Design Technology strands. Students will learn to generate ideas, apply techniques, and critically reflect on their own work to build media literacy and practical skills.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- AO1: Generate and develop initial media product ideas through sketching and annotation (National Curriculum - Design: Generating, Developing and Communicating Ideas, KS3).
- AO2: Apply basic design and media conventions relevant to their chosen media product (National Curriculum - Media Studies, KS3: Understanding Media Forms and Products).
- AO3: Review and adapt their sketches through self- and peer-assessment to enhance clarity and creativity (National Curriculum - Reflect and Evaluate Work, KS3).

Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (10 minutes)
Objective: Activate prior knowledge and set creative context.
- Present media product examples (e.g., magazine covers, app interfaces, video game concepts).
- Prompt a brief discussion: What media products do you use most? What appeals to you about them?
- Encourage students to identify key features and styles, recording quick notes on the board.
This links to National Curriculum speaking and listening objectives, developing critical awareness.
2. Main Activity Part 1: Brainstorming Concepts (15 minutes)
Objective: Generate diverse media product ideas.
- Students individually brainstorm ideas for a new media product (e.g., a youth magazine, an app, a short video concept).
- Use mind maps or lists in sketchbooks: identify target audience, genre, purpose, and key features.
- Encourage use of colour and annotations to clarify thoughts.
Supports generating and developing ideas (Design and Media KS3 strands).
3. Main Activity Part 2: Sketching Rough Drafts (20 minutes)
Objective: Translate ideas into rough visual drafts.
- Students produce at least two rough sketches of their media product idea (e.g., a front cover, app home screen, storyboard).
- Focus on framing, layout, imagery, typography (where applicable).
- Use annotation to explain design choices: why colours, fonts, or images are chosen.
- Teacher circulates offering targeted feedback, prompting students to consider media conventions learned.
Applies media conventions and techniques (Media Studies KS3).
4. Peer Review and Refinement (10 minutes)
Objective: Reflect and develop ideas through feedback.
- Students exchange sketchbooks and provide constructive feedback using a scaffold:
- What do you like about the idea?
- What could be improved or clearer?
- Any new ideas inspired?
- Students review the feedback, make notes, and refine sketches or annotations accordingly.
Encourages metacognition and verbal articulation skills (English speaking and listening).
5. Plenary and Self-Assessment (5 minutes)
Objective: Consolidate learning and self-evaluate progress.
- Students complete a quick self-assessment:
- What are you most proud of in today’s sketches?
- What do you want to improve in the next lesson?
- Teacher highlights key learning points and links to next lesson’s focus (moving from sketches to digital draft development).
Differentiation
- Provide sketch templates and vocabulary mats for students needing additional support.
- Challenge more able students with extended annotation tasks or including stakeholder considerations (e.g., client briefs).
- Scaffold peer feedback for confidence-building.
Assessment Opportunities
- Formative assessment through observation and questioning during the brainstorming and sketching stages.
- Peer feedback sheets to measure understanding of media conventions and effective communication.
- Self-assessment to promote reflective learning and Identify progress.
Cross-Curricular Opportunities
- Art & Design: Using sketching, colour theory, composition principles.
- English: Developing vocabulary, annotating ideas, peer discussions.
- ICT: Links to future lessons using digital media tools for prototype development.
Teacher Notes
- Encourage risk-taking in idea generation to ‘wow’ students with creative, original concepts.
- Use open-ended questions to provoke deeper thinking about target audiences and media impact.
- Consider recording a feedback audio clip for each student as an innovative assessment approach, accessible via their devices to enhance engagement and personalised learning.
This detailed, curriculum-aligned approach will equip students with essential practical skills in media idea development while fostering critical thinking and peer collaboration.
