Precision SPAG Practice

Overview

In this lesson students will practise identifying and correcting errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling using a shared “Year 9 SPAG Practice” worksheet. They will learn to spot common mistakes quickly, then revise their own answers to ensure accuracy and effectiveness.

Learning intentions

• Students will identify SPAG errors in short sentences and correct them for grammar, punctuation and spelling.
• Students will apply key Year 9 SPAG patterns (including punctuation control and sentence accuracy).
• Students will revise and proof-read responses, improving effectiveness not just correctness.

Success criteria

• I can correct punctuation errors (e.g., commas, apostrophes, full stops, and sentence boundaries) accurately.
• I can correct grammar errors (e.g., tense consistency, subject–verb agreement, and pronoun reference).
• I can correct spelling errors using common rules and accurate word forms.
• I can explain what I changed and why during error-finding and revision.

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Starter: error hunt intro. Teacher shows 3 short sentences with mixed SPAG errors on the board; students label what type of error they think it is (grammar/punctuation/spelling). Students work silently, then share one answer with a partner.

2. 5–12 min · Direct teach: “spot, justify, fix”. Teacher models one corrected sentence step-by-step: underline the mistake, identify the SPAG issue, then show the corrected version. Students highlight the same three stages on a second example provided by the teacher.

3. 12–25 min · Worksheet task 1: guided error-finding. Teacher distributes the “Year 9 SPAG Practice” worksheet; students complete Section A (error identification) first, not corrections yet. Error-finding prompts appear on the worksheet such as: “What is wrong here?”, “Where does the sentence boundary need correcting?”, “Which word form/spelling looks incorrect?”

4. 25–35 min · Worksheet task 2: corrections with explanation. Students complete Section B (correct each sentence) and add a brief justification using sentence starters:

• “I changed ___ because ___.” Teacher circulates with a focus checklist: tense consistency, punctuation placement, pronoun clarity, apostrophes, and spelling accuracy.

5. 35–42 min · Micro-proof-reading: trade and triage. In pairs, students swap one worksheet page and complete a “triage check” for the top 3 likely recurring issues in that pair’s work (teacher has highlighted the most common class errors from circulation). Students must find at least one remaining mistake or one improvement opportunity and note it.

6. 42–48 min · Whole-class recap: pattern teach-back. Teacher leads a fast recap using anonymised examples from the class board work (read out corrected vs incorrect forms). Students vote on the best option and say the rule/pattern they used.

7. 48–50 min · Plenary exit ticket. Students answer: “Choose one pattern you improved today and write the rule in one sentence.” Teacher collects quickly to plan next lesson grouping.

• Formative check in starter: students categorise errors correctly (grammar/punctuation/spelling).

Differentiation

• Support:
• Provide sentence-starter justifications (“I changed ___ because ___.”) and a short “rule bank” on the desk (comma control, apostrophes, tense consistency, subject–verb agreement).
• Offer a worked example for the first 2 items of the worksheet if needed.
• Secure:
• Require corrections plus a one-line justification linked to the error type.
• Extension:
• Add an extra challenge at the bottom of Section B: “Rewrite the sentence to improve clarity and punctuation, keeping the meaning the same.”
• EAL/SEN considerations:
• Allow use of coloured labels (G/P/S) rather than long explanations at first.
• Encourage copying the corrected punctuation carefully to reduce mechanical errors.
• For learners needing extra time, prioritise punctuation and spelling first, then grammar on the triage stage.

Differentiation

• Support:
• Sentence starters for justifications and a compact rule bank to refer to.
• Encourage learners to underline errors before writing corrections.
• Extension:
• “Improve the sentence” challenge for one item (clarity + correct punctuation) while preserving meaning.
• EAL/SEN:
• Reduce writing load for justifications to one phrase (“because: tense”, “because: apostrophe”) and accept oral justification to be written later.
• High attainers:
• Ask for an extra rewrite showing alternative punctuation choices and which is most effective.
