Precision Writing Skills

Overview

This lesson strengthens Year 7 writing by improving grammar accuracy and coherence, preparing students for Year 8 expectations. Students will revise short writing to correct common errors, then produce an improved paragraph for clarity and impact.

Learning intentions

• Students will write accurately using Standard English in a sustained paragraph.

• Students will amend grammar and vocabulary choices to improve overall effectiveness.
• Students will apply accurate punctuation and spelling in their writing.

Lesson structure (90 minutes)

1. 0–10 min · Warm-up: error hunt. Teacher displays a short paragraph with intentional Year 7 common errors (tense shifts, missing capital letters, comma splices, weak links). Students highlight errors and label what type they think it is (grammar/punctuation/spelling/coherence).

2. 10–22 min · Mini-lesson: coherence tools. Teacher models how to improve sentence flow using: topic sentences, logical ordering, and linking devices (however, therefore, in addition, as a result, for example) plus referential clarity (this/these/they). Students practise by rewriting 3 separate sentence connections on their worksheet to make them smoother and clearer.

3. 22–40 min · Focus grammar: fix the sentences. Teacher runs a quick “diagnose and repair” cycle:

• Choose one error pattern (e.g., incorrect comma use; tense inconsistency; apostrophe misuse).
• Explain the rule briefly and show a correct example. Students then complete a short editing task: for each faulty sentence, they write the corrected version and one improvement reason (e.g., “tense is consistent”, “punctuation clarifies meaning”, “linking words show cause”).

4. 40–55 min · Model planning for a paragraph. Teacher provides a Year 7 age-appropriate prompt (e.g., “Should schools allow phones in lessons? Explain your viewpoint.”). Students do a 3-line plan: claim, 2 supporting reasons with examples, and a concluding sentence. Teacher checks plans against coherence expectations and Standard English.

5. 55–75 min · Write: first attempt. Teacher sets a timed write: students produce one paragraph (8–10 sentences) using their plan. Students must include:

• a clear topic sentence
• at least 2 linking devices
• at least 2 punctuation points (one comma for lists/clauses and one apostrophe use) Teacher monitors and notes common errors to address in the next step.

6. 75–87 min · Edit and upgrade: grammar, punctuation, spelling, coherence. Teacher gives a simple checklist and models how to scan efficiently:

• Start with meaning: does each sentence follow logically?
• Then grammar: tense consistency and correct agreement.
• Then punctuation and spelling: commas/full stops, apostrophes, capitals, and key words. Students revise their paragraph, aiming to improve clarity and effectiveness rather than only “spot corrections”.

7. 87–90 min · Exit ticket: one deliberate improvement. Students submit their final paragraph and answer: “Which one change made your writing better (and why)?” Teacher collects to inform next lesson targets.

Assessment

• Ongoing teacher observation during error hunt and sentence repair (identifying misconceptions about punctuation/tense).
• Mid-lesson check: teacher reviews 3-line plans for coherence and logical structure before students write.
• Exit ticket identifies students’ understanding of what “improvement” means (editing purpose, not just correction).

Differentiation

• Support: provide sentence starters and a linking-device bank; offer a “fix-it” example sentence for each error type being targeted.
• Support: give a reduced editing checklist (fewer items) for students needing scaffolding; allow them to focus on two priorities (e.g., punctuation + tense).
• Extension: challenge students to vary sentence openings and include one embedded clause (e.g., “Because …, …” / “Although …, …”) to increase effectiveness; add a more precise vocabulary choice for one key noun/verb.
• EAL/SEN: model one worked example and provide a glossary of linking devices with short meanings; allow draft writing with additional time, focusing on accuracy priorities rather than length.
