Overview

Students learn to make and justify inferences by combining clues from a short narrative with their own knowledge. In a one-to-one lesson, the teacher models the thinking process aloud, then guides the student towards independent responses using evidence and precise explanation.

Lesson structure (35 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Hook: what is not said? Teacher opens with the hook and inference question and reads aloud: “Maya folded the note carefully, pushed it beneath the loose floorboard and checked the empty corridor twice.” Ask, “What might Maya be feeling, and what makes you think that?” Students give an initial inference, distinguishing between what the sentence says and what it suggests. Accept several possibilities if each is supported by a clue.

  2. 4–10 min · Direct teach: the inference equation. Teacher displays the inference model and introduces: inference = evidence from the text + what I already know. Model a think-aloud: “The words ‘checked the empty corridor twice’ suggest Maya is worried or nervous because people usually check repeatedly when they fear being seen.” Emphasise that an inference is not a random guess. Students help label the evidence, the inference and the explanation, then rehearse the sentence frame: “I infer that… because the text says… This suggests…”

  3. 10–15 min · Guided reading and noticing. Teacher gives the student a short narrative extract on the inference evidence worksheet and reads it aloud once, then invites the student to read it independently or echo-read selected paragraphs. Pause to identify one detail that reveals a character’s feelings and one detail that hints at a motive. Students underline or note the clues and explain whether each detail is retrieval or inference.

  4. 15–24 min · Evidence-to-inference planning. Teacher provides the Reading Inference Planning Mat and asks the student to choose two focus questions, such as “How does the character feel?” and “Why does the character act this way?” Prompt without supplying answers: “Which exact word or action helped you?” and “What do you know about situations like this?” Students record an evidence-to-inference chain and verbally explain each link. The teacher challenges weak answers with, “Could the clue suggest something else? Which interpretation fits best?”

  5. 24–31 min · Independent response and prediction. Teacher asks the student to complete the worksheet’s short-answer questions, including one question about a likely next event, then refers to the response and prediction prompts. Students write a two- or three-sentence answer using evidence and make a prediction based on both stated and implied details. The teacher briefly conferences, checking that the student has not copied a detail without explaining what it suggests.

  6. 31–35 min · Discuss and exit check. Teacher asks the student to present the strongest response aloud and uses the plenary prompts: “What is the difference between a guess and an inference?” and “How does evidence make an answer convincing?” Students complete the worksheet exit question: “The character is probably feeling ____. I know because ____. This suggests ____.” Give immediate feedback against the success criteria.
