Overview
This 45-minute lesson is designed for Year 1 students (ages 5-6), focusing on the development of number sense by recognising small quantities without counting (subitising). Lesson Structure
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Gather children on the carpet with dot cards face down. Briefly revisit previous lessons on counting.
- Introduce today’s activity: "Can you tell me how many dots there are without counting one by one?" Explain this is called “subitising.”
- Show one dot card (e.g. 3 dots in a triangle pattern) and ask, "How many do you see?" Emphasise quick recognition.

2. Main Teaching Activity (20 minutes)
Activity 1: Dot Card Flash (10 minutes)
- Flash different dot cards (1 to 5 dots) quickly (2-3 seconds each) on the board or hold up.
- Ask the class to call out the number they see without counting out loud.
- After each flash, invite 2-3 volunteers to explain how they knew the number quickly (e.g., "It looks like an L", "I saw two on one side and one on the other").
- Encourage the use of spatial language (e.g., “side by side,” “corners,” “middle”).
Activity 2: Match and Group (10 minutes)
- Distribute small collections of objects in groups between 1 and 5 to pairs.
- Each pair sorts their objects into quick-recognition groups (for example, creating patterns like two objects side by side and three in a triangle).
- Pairs then get one “challenge task” card showing a dot pattern and must recreate it physically using the objects.
- Circulate and prompt children to explain their reasoning.
3. Guided Practice (10 minutes)
- Use whiteboards and pens: display a dot pattern or a small group of objects on the interactive whiteboard.
- Children write or draw the number they see without counting, then show their boards simultaneously.

4. Plenary (5 minutes)
- Play a quick game called “Snap Numbers”: show 2 children each a dot card; first to shout the correct number (without counting) wins a point.

- Summarise the lesson by reinforcing that recognising numbers quickly is an important skill in maths.
