Lesson Outline (60 mins)
1. Engaging Introduction (10 mins)
Hook – The Roman Time Traveller
Begin with a short story:
"Imagine you are time travellers who arrive in Ancient Rome. To unlock the treasure chest, you must decipher the strange number system the Romans use."
- Show a large Roman numeral clock face image projected on the board.
- Ask:
- Has anyone ever seen these numbers before?
- Where might we see these numbers in our daily lives? (e.g., clocks, books, movie sequels, events)
- Quick quiz: Show several Roman numerals and ask for volunteers to try naming them aloud.
AfL: Observe pupils’ initial familiarity; note who can identify a few numerals without help.
2. Modelling and Teaching Focus (15 mins)
Step 1: Introduce Roman numeral symbols and rules (10 mins)
- Display a clear Roman numeral chart on the board from I, V, X, L, to C.
- Explain the values and key rules:
- Letters represent values (I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100).
- Numbers formed by combining and sometimes subtracting (e.g., IV = 4, IX = 9).
- Numerals are usually written largest to smallest from left to right.
- Model converting a few Arabic numbers to Roman numerals and back, e.g.: 23 → XXIII, 44 → XLIV, 68 → LXVIII, 99 → XCIX.
Step 2: Demonstrate problem-solving
- Present a short problem on the board:
“The gladiator games started at XV (15) and ended at XXXVII (37). How long did the games last?”
- Talk through your reasoning aloud, modelling converting Roman numerals to numbers, subtracting, then converting back if necessary.
