Safe Kitchen Rules

Lesson Overview

Subject: Other
Unit: Safe Kitchen Explorers (Lesson 1 of 5)
Year Group: Year 3
Duration: 60 minutes
Class Size: 2 students
Curriculum Area: PSHE & Citizenship – Health and Wellbeing (Key Stage 2)

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Understand why kitchen safety and hygiene are important.
  2. Identify common kitchen hazards.
  3. Explain ways to prevent accidents while cooking.

Success Criteria

  • I can name key kitchen hazards.
  • I can explain two ways to stay safe in the kitchen.
  • I can demonstrate correct handwashing technique.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction to Kitchen Safety (10 mins)

Hook: "What could go wrong?"

  • Show students a set of scenario cards (with images) of potential kitchen disasters (e.g., spilled water on the floor, a knife left near the edge of a counter, an unattended hob).
  • Ask: What do you see? What might happen?

Discussion:

  • Why do we need to be careful in the kitchen?
  • Has there ever been a time when you saw something dangerous in a kitchen?

2. Identifying Kitchen Hazards (15 mins)

Activity: Spot the Danger!

  • Lay out kitchen hazard cards around the classroom (e.g., an image of a hot pan, an open drawer with sharp knives, a wet floor).
  • Students move around, find a hazard, and explain what could happen and how to stay safe.
  • Teacher scribes key hazards on the board under two headings: Physical Hazards (e.g., burns, cuts, slips) and Hygiene Hazards (e.g., germs, spoiled food).

3. Preventing Accidents & Staying Safe (15 mins)

Discussion:

  • What can we do to make the kitchen safer?
  • Introduce "The Golden Rules of Kitchen Safety" (e.g., wash hands, handle knives safely, clean spills immediately).

Demonstration: How to wash hands properly

  • Teacher demonstrates correct technique (following NHS handwashing guidance).
  • Students practise and review each other’s technique.

4. Mini Role-play Scenarios (15 mins)

Activity:

  • Give each student a kitchen safety challenge card (e.g., "You dropped water on the floor – what should you do?" or "You want to cut vegetables – what should you check first?").
  • Students act out the correct safe behaviour, with teacher guidance.

5. Reflection and Recap (5 mins)

Plenary:

  • Ask: What is one new thing you learned today?
  • Introduce a safety detective mission for next lesson: Students look for good and bad kitchen safety practices at home and report back.

Differentiation

For Higher Ability:

  • Encourage students to suggest additional safety rules beyond those discussed.

For Lower Ability:

  • Use additional visual supports and check understanding through questioning.

Assessment Strategies

  • Observation of participation in discussions and activities.
  • Peer feedback during role-play scenarios.
  • Oral questioning during recap.
