Overview

This 90-minute session consolidates the whole unit of safeguarding, aligned with NCFE CACHE Health and Social Care Level 3, Year 1 HSC CM3. The focus is on reinforcing key safeguarding concepts, applying knowledge in practical ways, and preparing students for real-world scenarios in health and social care settings.

National Curriculum Context

While the primary focus is on NCFE CACHE HSC Level 3 content, the session aligns with the overarching English National Curriculum's Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education framework for Key Stage 4/5, particularly:

• PSHE Association Framework: Health and Wellbeing strand, safeguarding and recognising risks
• DfE Statutory Guidance: Keeping Children Safe in Education, reinforcing understanding of safeguarding responsibilities

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, students will:

1. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of safeguarding principles including protection from abuse, recognising signs of neglect or harm, and knowing referral procedures (NCFE CM3 LO1, LO2).
2. Apply safeguarding policies and codes of practice effectively in varied care scenarios (NCFE CM3 LO3).
3. Evaluate the effectiveness of safeguarding measures within health and social care environments (NCFE CM3 LO4).

Detailed Activities

Starter: Safeguarding Snap Quiz (10 minutes)

• Use a quick interactive quiz featuring Q&A on safeguarding definitions, key legislation (e.g., Children Act 1989/2004), and types of abuse.
• Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and engage students immediately.

Recap Presentation & Discussion (15 minutes)

• Present safeguarding fundamentals covering: safeguarding vs. protection, statutory guidance, recognising abuse, reporting lines, and confidentiality.
• Encourage Q&A to clarify misunderstandings and deepen understanding.

Scenario-based Group Work (20 minutes)

• Distribute carefully crafted case studies involving potential safeguarding issues (e.g., neglect signs, inappropriate behaviour).
• Students discuss how to respond, documenting who they should report to and what actions they should take.
• Emphasise application of the “six Rs” of safeguarding: Recognise, Respond, Report, Record, Refer, and Reflect.

Interactive Role Plays (15 minutes)

• Students enact scenarios from the case studies, practising communication skills, safeguarding reporting, and empathy.
• Observers provide constructive feedback using a checklist focusing on correct safeguarding process adherence.

Policy Review Workshop (15 minutes)

• Provide extracts from real health and social care safeguarding policies.
• Students work in pairs or small groups to summarise the key elements and consider effectiveness.
• Discuss how policies protect vulnerable individuals and support care workers.

Reflective Journaling & Peer Feedback (10 minutes)
