Overview

In this 60-minute lesson, Year 2 students will focus on enhancing their fairy tale scripts, paying close attention to dialogue clarity and narrative flow. They will start rehearsing their scenes with peers, practising teamwork and collaborative skills. This lesson forms part of the "Fairy Tale Performance Adventure" unit and aligns with the National Curriculum for England’s aims for Drama in Key Stage 1.

Lesson Structure

Introduction (10 minutes)

• Recap & Context: Brief reminder of the fairy tale stories and script-writing done so far. Highlight today’s focus on improving dialogue and rehearsing collaboratively.
• Set Success Criteria: Together, create a simple checklist on the board:
  • Is the dialogue clear and easy to understand?
  • Does the story flow smoothly?
  • Are all group members working together and listening?
• Demonstration: Teacher models refining a small script excerpt by simplifying or clarifying dialogue and reading it aloud with expression.

Main Activity 1: Script Refinement (20 minutes)

• Pupils work in their small groups (3–4 per group) to:
  • Reread their scripts aloud, listening for awkward phrases or confusing parts.
  • Edit dialogue to make it easier to say and understand, using peer feedback.
  • Use storyboards or flow charts to check sequence and flow. Teachers circulate, prompting with questions:
    • “Does this sentence sound natural?”
    • “What could you say instead to make it clearer?”
    • “Is this part exciting and important to the story?”

Main Activity 2: Group Rehearsal (25 minutes)

• Groups rehearse their scenes with refined scripts, focusing on:
  • Speaking clearly and loudly enough for the audience.
  • Using voice and facial expressions to convey feeling.
  • Practising turn-taking and supporting others on stage.
• Teacher uses a stopwatch to time each group’s run-through (3–5 minutes).
• After rehearsals, groups briefly discuss:
  • What worked well?
  • What could be improved next time?
• Optional: Use mirror for pupils to practise facial expressions and gestures.

Plenary (5 minutes)

• Gather pupils in a circle. Discuss:
  • What did you enjoy about working on your script today?
  • How did your group help each other during rehearsal?
  • What are you looking forward to for the next lesson?
• Praise collaborative effort and highlight examples of good teamwork and expressive speaking.
