Setting the Mood

Overview

In this session, children will deepen their understanding of descriptive writing by exploring how the five senses can be used deliberately to create atmosphere and mood in narrative settings. They will engage in sensory activities to stimulate vivid descriptions and participate in a collaborative writing task to apply their learning. This fits within the broader year 4 writing curriculum focused on composition and vocabulary development.

• Sensory mystery boxes/bags with items students can touch, smell, or see (e.g. pine cones, fabric, a jar of cinnamon, a shell, a picture of a stormy sea)
• Whiteboard or flip chart and markers
• Writing templates for group activity (structured with space for senses and mood words)
• Visual mood word bank (calm, eerie, cosy, gloomy, cheerful, tense, etc.)
• Lined paper and pens for group writing task

Lesson Structure and Activities

Starter (10 minutes)

• Begin by recapping what makes writing descriptive and how it can paint a picture for the reader.
• Show a short, vivid descriptive paragraph on the board that uses sensory details to create a mood (e.g. a misty morning on the moors).
• Discuss as a class:
• Which senses do you notice in this paragraph?
• How do these details make you feel about this place? What mood is created?

Outcome: Students begin to see the link between sensory words and mood.

Sensory Exploration and Discussion (15 minutes)

• Divide students into pairs and give each pair a sensory bag.
• Challenge each pair to explore the contents using all applicable senses (except taste, due to safety).
• Each group lists descriptive words / phrases connected to the senses they experienced and describes the mood these words suggest.
• Groups share aloud their findings and discuss how the five senses influence the mood created.

Curriculum focus: Expanding vocabulary for meaning and mood, speaking and listening skills.

Teaching Input / Modelling (10 minutes)

• Teacher uses a familiar setting (e.g. school playground) and models how to write a short descriptive paragraph focusing on mood using the five senses.
• Highlight use of expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials to build sentences.
• Example:
• "Under the grey, whispering trees, the cool, damp air carried the faint smell of wet earth. Quiet footsteps echoed softly across the empty playground, creating a mysterious, almost eerie calm."

Focus: Sentence construction, vocabulary choice, sensory detail.

Group Writing Activity (20 minutes)

• In groups of four, students choose one sensory mood from the visual word bank (e.g. eerie, joyful, cosy).
• Using a provided structured template, groups brainstorm:
• Sensory words for each of the five senses related to their chosen mood and setting.
• Planning their paragraph layout with fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases.
• Groups write a short descriptive paragraph together aiming to evoke the chosen mood through sensory language.
• Teacher circulates, offering prompts and scaffolding grammar and vocabulary.

Plenary / Sharing (5 minutes)

• Each group reads their paragraph aloud to the class.
• Class gives positive feedback focusing on which senses were effective and how the mood was created.
• Teacher highlights how sensory detail influences reader experience and reminds students this is a key tool in descriptive writing.

• Formative: Observation of group discussions, contribution to sensory word lists, and engagement in activities.
• Written output: Evaluate group paragraphs for use of sensory description, mood vocabulary, expanded noun phrases, and structured sentence starters.
