Overview
Lesson 2 of 5 in the unit "Shape Explorers Adventure".
Students build on prior knowledge of 2D shapes by sorting a collection of shapes using attributes such as number of sides and colour. They record their observations and justify sorting choices using both everyday and mathematical language, incorporating te reo Māori terms, in alignment with NZ Curriculum Refresh (nz_nzc_refresh) for Year 2 Mathematics.

Resources Needed
- Sets of various 2D shapes (paper or plastic cut-outs): triangles, squares, rectangles, circles, hexagons, pentagons, with varied colours.
- Shape Sorting Worksheet (designed for recording groups sorted by attribute, space for explanations).
- Whiteboard and markers.
- Visual vocabulary chart with shape names and description words, including te reo Māori terms.
- Recording materials: pencils, crayons.
- Example sorting cards (e.g., number of sides, colour) for modelling.
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Recap previous lesson’s learning about 2D shapes using realia and images.
- Introduce the activity: "Shape Sorting Adventure" — sorting shapes by their features.
- Show examples of shapes and discuss simple attributes (number of sides/taha, colour/tae).
- Highlight and display relevant te reo Māori terms (e.g., tapatoru - triangle, tapawhā rite - square), encouraging students to use both English and Māori terms.
Teacher language example:
"Today, we are shape explorers! Let's look carefully at each shape and sort them. How many sides (taha) does this tapatoru have? What colour (tae) is it?"
2. Guided Sorting and Modelling (10 minutes)
- Present a mixed group of shapes visibly to the class.
- Guide students through sorting shapes by one attribute at a time: first by number of sides, then by colour. Use think-aloud strategies to model reasoning.
- Fill out a sample on the whiteboard or visualiser showing sorted groups and record why shapes belong there in both everyday and mathematical language.
- Include te reo Māori terms in descriptions and provide simple sentence starters, e.g., "This shape is a tapawhā rite because it has four equal sides," or "These are all kākāriki (green) shapes."
3. Independent/Paired Sorting Activity (15 minutes)
- Students work in pairs or small groups with individual sets of shapes and the Shape Sorting Worksheet.
- Instruct students to:
- Sort the shapes by at least two different attributes (e.g., number of sides and colour).
- Record their sorted groups and use the worksheet prompts to justify their sorting choices with a sentence that includes mathematical and everyday language, with encouragement to use te reo Māori terms where possible.
Example worksheet prompt:
"Group these shapes. How did you sort them? (Use words like sides/taha, corners/koki, colour/tae. Include English and Māori words)."
- Teacher circulates, supports discussion, prompts reasoning with questions like:
- "How many sides does this shape have?"
- "What is the difference between these two groups?"
- "Can you use Māori words to explain your group?"
4. Sharing and Discussion (10 minutes)
- Invite several pairs/groups to share their sorting choices and explanations with the class.
- Encourage use of mathematical language and te reo Māori in their explanations.
- Draw attention to the diversity of valid sorting methods and correct terminology.
- Reinforce key vocabulary and praise use of bilingual language.
5. Reflective Closure (5 minutes)
- Summarise learning points, revisiting the mathematical terms, sorting strategies, and bilingual words.
- Ask: "What did you notice about the shapes when you sorted them?"
- Assign a simple "shape spotting" challenge for home or next lesson: "Find 2D shapes at home and describe them using two attributes."
