Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

1. Understand the importance of internet safety.
2. Recognise personal information that should not be shared online.

Lesson Outline (45 minutes)

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Greeting and Settling Down (2 minutes)

   • Welcome the students and settle them down.

2. Discussion Starter (3 minutes)

   • Briefly explain that today’s lesson is about staying safe on the internet.
   • Ask students if they have used the internet and what they use it for (e.g., games, videos, talking to family).

3. Objective Sharing (5 minutes)

   • Clearly state the lesson objectives in simple terms.
   • Explain why it’s important to stay safe online.
   • Mention that they will learn through fun activities.

Main Activities (30 minutes)

1. Personal Information Flashcards (10 minutes)

   • Show flashcards with pictures (e.g., name, address, favourite colour, pet’s name).
   • Discuss which pieces of information are okay to share and which should remain private.
   • Separate flashcards into two groups: Safe to Share and Private Information.

2. Puppet Role-Play (10 minutes)

   • Use puppets to act out situations involving internet safety (e.g., a puppet trying to find out another puppet’s address).
   • Encourage students to shout out “Stop!” when they hear a puppet ask for private information.
   • Discuss what the puppet should do instead (e.g., tell a trusted adult).

3. Online Safety Song (optional) (5 minutes)

   • Teach the students a simple song about online safety (e.g., “Stay Safe Online” to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”).
   • Sing together as a class to reinforce the concepts.

4. Safety Signs Activity (5 minutes)

   • Distribute printouts of common safety signs and symbols.
   • Explain each sign and their significance in staying safe online.
   • Have students colour the signs as you explain.

Closing (5 minutes)

1. Review and Reinforce (3 minutes)

   • Recap the main points: keep personal information private, tell a trusted adult if something feels wrong, and use the internet respectfully.
   • Ask a few students to share one thing they learned.

2. Questions and Answers (2 minutes)

   • Open the floor for any questions.
   • Thank students for their participation and remind them to stay safe online.

Differentiation

• For Higher Ability Students: Provide additional scenarios for the puppet role-play.
• For Lower Ability Students/SEND: Offer support with flashcards and one-on-one assistance during activities.

Assessment

• Formative Assessment: Observe student participation during discussions and activities. Check for understanding through questions and their ability to sort the flashcards correctly.
• Summative Assessment: Collect colouring activity sheets and check for comprehension on safety signs.

Extension Activity

• Home Task: Encourage students to share what they learned about internet safety with their families and ask parents to sign a safety pledge.

Reflection

• Encourage follow-up lessons and continuous reinforcement of internet safety concepts throughout the school year.
