Sustainability and Pride

Lesson Overview

This 40-minute session is an engaging introduction to Big Green Week and Pride Month designed specifically for two Year 11 students. It explores the themes of sustainability and LGBTQ+ inclusivity in a way that ties directly into the PSHE curriculum (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) within the National Curriculum for England. The lesson promotes awareness, respect, and proactive citizenship while remaining fun and interactive without role-playing.

Lesson Structure

1. Welcome and Introductions (5 minutes)

Greet students and briefly outline the session's aims.
Activate prior knowledge by asking: “What do you already know about sustainability and Pride Month?”
Affirm that this is a safe, respectful space to share ideas.

2. Quick-fire Theme Sort (10 minutes)

Activity: Interactive sorting game without role play.

Present 12 ‘theme cards’ describing statements, statistics, and positive actions related to either sustainability or Pride.
Students work collaboratively to sort cards into two categories: “Big Green Week” and “Pride Month”.
Discuss each card briefly for understanding and relevance. For example: “Why is reducing plastic waste important for sustainability?” or “What does Pride Month mean to people in the LGBTQ+ community?”
Highlight overlapping concepts such as respect, community support, and positive change.

3. Mini Challenge: My Green or Proud Action (15 minutes)

Activity: Personal planning task with creative presentation.

Provide each student with sticky notes and pens.
Ask them to think about one action they can take to celebrate Big Green Week or Pride Month. Ideas might include: using less plastic, supporting a local LGBTQ+ charity, or learning about someone new’s experience.
Each student writes or draws their idea on sticky notes.
Then, they present their action to each other, explaining why they chose it and how it could make a difference.
Encourage thoughtful responses and build positive peer feedback.

4. Reflect and Connect (7 minutes)

Facilitate a discussion reflecting on how the themes are interlinked, particularly the importance of community, respect, and action.
Prompt with questions like: “How can being kind and respectful to others also help the environment?” and “In what ways can standing up for sustainability also support equal rights and diversity?”
Reinforce how these two events happening at the same time encourage us to be thoughtful citizens.

5. Wrap-Up and Looking Ahead (3 minutes)

Summarise key takeaways from the lesson.
Invite students to share one word or phrase describing how they feel about the upcoming week and their role in it.
Explain that next week will involve more activities linked to these themes.
Encourage them to keep thinking about their actions and be ready to take part in upcoming events.

Assessment and Feedback

Formative assessment through observation of participation and discussion involvement.
Evaluate understanding via the sorting activity accuracy and depth of explanations during the mini challenge.
Feedback given immediately with encouraging reinforcement of respectful language, thoughtfulness, and creativity.
At the lesson’s end, student reflections will inform the teacher of their emotional engagement and readiness for deeper exploration.

The small group size allows the teacher to tailor prompts and support as needed.
