Lesson Structure

Starter Activity (10 minutes) – What is Sustainability?

  • Write the word "Sustainability" on the board.
  • Ask students what they think “sustainability” means. Record quick ideas.
  • Show a simple, image-led definition: "Using resources today without stopping future generations from meeting their needs."
  • Discuss briefly the three pillars of sustainability: Environmental, Social, and Economic.
  • To make it interactive, ask students to share examples from home or school that they think might be sustainable or unsustainable. Write notes on the board.

Main Activity 1 (15 minutes) – Sustainability Scenarios Carousel

  • Groups discuss and decide: Is this example sustainable or unsustainable? Why?
  • Students use post-it notes to write down key reasons and place it on the map relevant to the activity’s location or concept. For example, deforestation might be linked to the Amazon rainforest on the map.
  • Teacher circulates to support discussion and challenge reasoning where needed.

Main Activity 2 (20 minutes) – Create a Sustainability Infographic

  • Each group chooses one sustainability scenario they found most interesting.

    • The impact on people, economy, and environment
    • One practical solution or alternative to improve the sustainability of this activity
  • Infographic can include diagrams, symbols, short texts, and colour coding for the three sustainability pillars.
  • Teacher guides students in structuring the infographic and encourages creativity.

Plenary (10 minutes) – Gallery Walk and Reflection

  • Groups display their infographics around the room.
  • Students circulate, silently viewing each group's infographic, placing a star sticker or tick on two infographics they found insightful.

    • What is one new thing you learned about sustainability today?
    • Why is sustainable thinking important for the future of our planet?
    • How can you practise sustainability in your daily life?
