Resources Needed
- Copies of Safiyyah’s War, chapters 5 and 6 (or extract printouts)
- Whiteboard and pens
- Sticky notes
- Student exercise books or lined paper
- Character emotion cards
- Timer or stopwatch
- Interactive quiz cards or Kahoot style platform (optional, if technology available)
Lesson Structure
Starter (10 minutes)
Activity: Quick Recall & Think-Pair-Share
- Display 3 key quotes on the board from chapters 5 and 6, including one from Tarek's revelation.
- Students silently read and underline words/phrases that stand out.
- In pairs, share thoughts on why these quotes might be important and what they reveal about characters.
- Class shares a few ideas, teacher clarifies and connects to the theme of revelations and conflict escalation.
NC Link: Develops retrieval skills and begins inference work (reading comprehension).
Main Activity 1 (15 minutes)
Activity: Hot Seating - Character Exploration
- Select 4 volunteer students to “hot seat” as Tarek, Safiyyah, and other key characters involved in chapters 5 and 6.
- The rest of the class prepare questions to ask these characters about their feelings, motivations, and thoughts during Tarek’s revelation.
- Hot-seated students respond in character, supported by teacher prompts if needed.
NC Link: Enhances spoken language skills and inferential understanding of character (spoken language, reading).
Main Activity 2 (15 minutes)
Activity: Empathy Mapping & Inference
- Distribute character emotion cards and a blank empathy map template with sections: Feelings, Thoughts, Motives, Fears.
- In small groups, students select one character from the chapters and fill in the empathy map using textual evidence and inference.
- Groups share their findings with the class, promoting comparison of different perspectives.
NC Link: Supports deeper analysis and inference, develops empathy which is crucial for understanding context and narrative.
Main Activity 3 (10 minutes)
Activity: Creative Writing - Alternative Perspective
- Students write a short diary entry (approx. 100 words) from Tarek’s perspective immediately after the revelation.
- Prompt to include his possible emotions, doubts, or hopes, drawing on prior discussion and text clues.
- Emphasise use of first person, emotive language, and informal style appropriate for diary entries.
NC Link: Writing composition adapted to purpose and audience; creative development (writing).
Plenary (10 minutes)
Activity: Exit Ticket Reflection & Quick Quiz
- Each student writes on a sticky note one insight they gained about Tarek or another character.
- Sticky notes are placed on the board, creating a "wall of thoughts." Teacher reads some aloud.
- Quick whole-class quiz (verbal or Kahoot) on key plot points and character motives from chapters 5 and 6 to consolidate learning.
NC Link: Reflection builds metacognitive skills; quiz supports retrieval.
Assessment Opportunities
- Observation of participation in hot seating and group discussions (speaking & listening assessment).
- Quality of empathy maps to check depth of inference and textual understanding.
- Diary entries assessed against criteria for tone, vocabulary, and coherence in writing.
- Exit ticket reflections used to inform understanding of individual learning.
Differentiation
- Support: Sentence starters for diary writing, empathy maps with guiding questions, mixed-ability pairs for hot seating.
- Challenge: Independent creation of additional questions for hot seating, extension task to write a dialogue between Tarek and another character post-revelation.
Extension/Homework (Optional)
- Research the historical/cultural context behind the conflict in Safiyyah’s War and prepare a short presentation on how real-life events may shape character motivations.
- Write a letter from Safiyyah to Tarek, expressing her feelings and advice after chapter 6.
Teachers’ Notes
- Encourage active listening and respectful debate during hot seating—model questioning strategies.
- Emphasise the importance of evidence from the text to support inferences.
- Use real-time feedback during activities to scaffold and deepen understanding.
- Highlight language features (e.g., emotive vocabulary) during the creative writing segment to link reading and writing skills.
This lesson plan combines interactive drama techniques, critical thinking, and creative writing, offering an engaging, multi-sensory approach tailored to Year 7 learners within the National Curriculum framework for English.
