Overview

This lesson plan is designed for Year 2 students, aligned with the UK National Curriculum, focusing on the fundamental movement skills of throwing and catching. The aim is to develop coordination, control, and teamwork in a fun and engaging manner.

Materials Needed

• Soft foam balls (one for each pair of students)
• Cones (for boundary markers)
• Bean bags

Lesson Structure

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Activity: Animal Movements

• Description: Guide students through a series of animal movements (e.g., “hop like a rabbit”, “stomp like an elephant”, “stretch like a cat”) to get their muscles warmed up. Select animals that use dynamic movements to prepare the body for the lesson.

Introduction to Throwing and Catching (10 minutes)

1. Demonstration: Show students the correct technique for an underhand and overhand throw and the importance of watching the ball with their eyes.

   • Focus on stance, aim, and follow-through for throw.
   • Explain and demonstrate „big hands” (wide open palms) for catching.

2. Practice Drill:

   • Have students find a partner and stand approximately three feet apart.
   • Practice throwing and catching using slow, controlled movements. Encourage the use of both hands for catching.

Main Activity – Throw and Catch Stations (20 minutes)

Station 1: Target Throw

• Setup: Use cones and hula hoops as targets.
• Activity: Students take turns throwing the ball to land inside the hula hoop. Start with larger hoops and progress to smaller ones for added difficulty.

Station 2: Partner Catch

• Setup: Form pairs at a designated area marked with cones.
• Activity: Partners face each other and toss the ball back and forth. Challenge them to take a step back after every successful catch.

Station 3: Bean Bag Catch

• Setup: Distribute bean bags at this station.
• Activity: Students practice throwing and catching lightweight bean bags with their partners. Focus on improving their catching technique.

Station 4: Moving Catch

• Setup: Create a circular area with cones.
• Activity: Students form a circle and pass the ball around. Introduce movement by having them walk or lightly jog while passing the ball.

Rotate every 5 minutes to ensure all students experience each station.

Cool Down and Reflection (5 minutes)

1. Stretching: Guide students through a series of gentle stretches, focusing on arms and shoulders.

2. Reflection: Gather students in a circle and discuss:

   • What they found easy or challenging.
   • How they felt about working with their partners.
   • One thing they enjoyed about the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe students’ ability to throw and catch effectively.
• Assess improvement in coordination and control.
• Evaluate teamwork and communication during activities.

Differentiation

• Provide larger balls or bean bags for students who may need them.
• Offer one-on-one support to students struggling with specific techniques.
• Challenge advanced students by increasing the distance in partner catch.
