Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (10 minutes) - "Feel the Temperature"
Objective: Engage students in exploring temperature differences.

Mystery Objects Challenge
- Prepare three objects:
- A warm (not hot) wheat bag or bottle wrapped in a cloth.
- A room-temperature stone or book.
- A cold ice pack wrapped in a paper towel.
- Pass the objects around and ask students:
- "How does this feel?"
- "Which one is the warmest? Coldest?"
- Guide them towards using temperature words like hot, cold, warm, chilly, freezing.

- Ask students:
- "Where do we find warm places in school?"
- "Which parts of our classroom feel colder?"
- Let students discuss their answers with a partner before sharing with the class.
2. Main Teaching (15 minutes) - “What is Temperature?”
Objective: Introduce temperature as a measure of hotness or coldness.

Show a Simple Large Thermometer
- Use a classroom thermometer or a large visual model.
- Explain:
- "This helps us measure how hot or cold something is."
- "Hot things have a higher temperature, cold things have a lower temperature."

The Magic of Degrees (°C)
- Explain that temperature is measured in degrees Celsius (°C).
- Use hand signals:
- Hands up high for hot (e.g. 30°C)
- Hands down low for cold (e.g. 0°C).

Real-Life Temperature Examples
- Use pictures (from the UK) to compare places and seasons:
- Sunny summer day (e.g. 25°C in Brighton)
- Snowy day (e.g. 0°C in Scotland)
- A fridge (about 4°C)
- A kettle with warm tea (about 60°C – but "too hot to touch!")
3. Hands-On Activity (20 minutes) – “Thermometer Detectives”
Objective: Learn to read and compare temperatures.

Small Group Experiment (6 groups, 5 students per group)
- Set up 3 cups per group:
- One with ice water
- One with room-temperature water
- One with warm water (checked for safe temperatures)
- Give each group a simple plastic thermometer.
- Guide them to:
- Place the thermometer in each cup gently.
- Read the temperature using the scale (teacher-assisted).
- Record which cup is the hottest/coldest.
