Overview
This is lesson 2 of 3 in the unit "Volcanoes: Nature's Fiery Giants." In this 60-minute lesson, Year 3 students will explore the causes and effects of volcanic eruptions. Using a combination of discussion, multimedia, and inquiry-based activities, students will develop an understanding of how volcanoes erupt and the impacts these eruptions have on the environment and human populations.

Lesson Structure
1. Starter Activity (10 minutes)
Goal: Activate prior knowledge and generate curiosity.
- Begin by asking pupils what they already know about volcanoes and volcanic eruptions. Use a mind map on the board to record their ideas (encourage scientific terms where possible).
- Prompt with questions like:
- What do you think causes a volcano to erupt?
- What might happen when a volcano erupts?
- Introduce the learning objectives for the lesson using child-friendly language.
2. Teaching Input (15 minutes)
Goal: Introduce causes and effects of volcanic eruptions.
- Show a carefully selected video (3-5 minutes) that explains:
- How pressure builds up underground causing magma to rise.
- What happens during an eruption (lava flow, ash cloud, volcanic gases).
- Effects on the environment such as destruction of plants, changes to the landscape, and air pollution.
- Effects on humans like evacuation and impacts on homes and farming.
- Pause at key points to ask comprehension questions and clarify vocabulary. Write new words on the board and encourage pupils to repeat.
3. Group Discussion and Deepening Understanding (15 minutes)
Goal: Develop critical thinking and consolidate learning.
- In small groups of 5-6 pupils, provide each group with a set of scenario cards describing different effects of volcanic eruptions (e.g., ash covering crops, lava destroying roads, new land formation, ash cloud affecting flights).
- Ask each group to sort the cards into effects related to the environment and effects related to people.
- Each group selects one card from each category to share with the whole class and explain why it fits that category.
4. Independent Activity / Assessment (15 minutes)
Goal: Check understanding and encourage expression through drawing and writing.
- Hand out an assessment worksheet with two tasks:
- Write 2-3 sentences explaining what causes a volcanic eruption using key words from today’s lesson.
- Draw a picture of a volcanic eruption showing at least three effects discussed in class, labelling parts such as “lava,” “ash cloud,” “destroyed homes.”
- Teachers and teaching assistants circulate to support and prompt pupils to use scientific vocabulary.
5. Plenary and Reflection (5 minutes)
Goal: Summarise key learning and embed vocabulary.
- Invite a small number of pupils to share their drawings and explanations with the class.
- Recap the main points using phrases from the lesson, reinforce scientific terms.
- End with a question for the upcoming lesson: “What happens after a volcano erupts? How does the land change over time?” to build curiosity for Lesson 3.
Differentiation
- For pupils needing additional support: Provide sentence starters on the worksheet.
- For more able pupils: Encourage them to include more effects or explain how some effects might be long-term and others short-term.
