Learning Objectives

Starter Activity (15 minutes): Introducing the Theme of War

Objective: Engage pupils emotionally and intellectually with the theme of war to create context for the poem.

Activity Steps:

1. Visual & Audio Stimulus (5 minutes)

   • Show pupils a short, carefully selected silent image montage or a sequence of war-related visuals (historical photos, symbolic images such as a poppy, battlefield trenches, children, peace monuments).
   • Play a subtle soundscape of war sounds: distant explosions, bugle calls, or silence interrupted by solemn drum beats. (Use classroom speakers at low volume to create atmosphere.)
   • Pupils will write down their immediate feelings and associations on post-it notes, answering the prompt:
     “What thoughts or emotions come to mind when you see these images and hear these sounds?”

2. Think-Pair-Share (7 minutes)

   • Pupils pair up to discuss their thoughts and emotions, highlighting similarities or differences between their responses.
   • After discussion, each pair shares one interesting insight with the class, which the teacher writes on the board under the heading: “How war affects people.”

3. Introduction to Poem Theme (3 minutes)

   • Teacher introduces A Century Later as a poem which reflects on the long-lasting effects of war, prompted by the class discussion on war’s impacts.
   • Provide a brief context on the poem’s historical or thematic background (e.g., post-WWI reflections, remembrance). Emphasise that the poem explores how war resonates across generations.
