Lesson structure (90 minutes)

  1. 0–10 min · Starter: hazard spotting. Pairs use the colour-coded sections to record at least four hazards, who could be harmed, existing controls, further controls and an appropriate priority; they also check PPE, tool storage, walkways, materials, slips and trips, sharp edges, electrical equipment and emergency access.

  5. 75–85 min · Formative assessment: question and traffic lights. Teacher uses the questioning and traffic-light check slides to ask individual and paired questions, including “What is the hazard?”, “What is the risk?”, “Which control is most effective?” and “What would you do first in an emergency?” Students show green, amber or red confidence cards/signals, justify selected answers and correct one incomplete worksheet response after feedback.

  6. 85–90 min · Plenary and exit evidence. Teacher displays the safety commitment and plenary slide and asks each student to complete the sentence, “To work safely, I will…” and “One hazard is…, controlled by…”. Students write one personal safety commitment and one hazard-control statement on the worksheet, then hand it in as their exit ticket.
