Mastering Column Subtraction with Regrouping
Year 5 Mathematics 60-minute lesson WALT: Confidently subtract 4-digit numbers with regrouping
WALT & Success Criteria
We Are Learning To: Confidently subtract 4-digit numbers with regrouping I can partition numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones I can recognise when regrouping is needed I can subtract starting from the ones column I can explain the regrouping process I can check answers using addition
Understanding Place Value
Thousands = 1000s Hundreds = 100s Tens = 10s Ones = 1s Each column has a specific value We can exchange between columns when needed
Warm-Up: Mental Subtraction
Try these without regrouping: 42 - 15 = ? 583 - 274 = ? Think about your method Share your thinking process
Step-by-Step Regrouping Process
Worked Example: 6375 - 2896
Start with ones: 5 - 6 (need to borrow!) Borrow 1 from tens: 15 - 6 = 9 Tens column: 6 - 9 (need to borrow!) Borrow 1 from hundreds: 16 - 9 = 7 Continue this process for all columns Final answer: 3479
Your Turn: Guided Practice
Try: 5042 - 2897 Use base-10 blocks if needed Work through each column carefully Check your answer using addition Explain your regrouping steps
Remember
"When the top number is smaller than the bottom number in any column, we need to borrow from the column to the left. This doesn't change the total value - we're just rearranging it!"
