📖 Historical Extract: The Witchcraft Trials in Britain

Between 1450 and 1750, thousands of people across Britain were accused of witchcraft. The peak period occurred during the 16th and 17th centuries, when fear and superstition gripped communities. Most accused were women, often elderly or living alone. The trials were particularly intense during times of social stress, such as harvest failures or disease outbreaks.

In England, the Witchcraft Act of 1542 made witchcraft a crime punishable by death. Scotland saw some of the most brutal persecutions, with King James VI (later James I of England) personally overseeing many trials. The infamous Matthew Hopkins, known as the "Witchfinder General," was responsible for the deaths of over 100 people in East Anglia during the 1640s.

Evidence used in trials included "spectral evidence" (claims of seeing the accused's spirit), unusual marks on the body, and confessions often obtained through torture. The last execution for witchcraft in England occurred in 1685, whilst Scotland's final execution took place in 1727. The Witchcraft Act was finally repealed in 1736.
