Bus Stop Division Practice
A bus is being packed for a school trip. Use the bus stop method to divide. For answers with a remainder, write the remainder after the quotient. Show your working where asked.
Warm up: passengers and seats
Solve each division. Write the quotient, and include any remainder.
1.The driver shares 84 trip leaflets equally among 4 stops. Calculate 84 ÷ 4 using the bus stop method.
2.There are 96 passengers to split equally between 3 buses. Complete the calculation: 96 ÷ 3 = .
3.A box contains 75 paper tickets. They are sorted into 5 equal bundles. How many tickets are in each bundle? Show your bus stop working.
The journey gets trickier
Some journeys do not divide exactly. Remember to check what your remainder means in the story.
4.A bus company has 67 passengers and 4 minibuses. If the passengers are shared as evenly as possible, how many go in each minibus and how many are left over?
5.A guide has 88 maps and gives the same number to each of 6 tour leaders. Choose the correct quotient and remainder.
- 14 remainder 4
- 14 remainder 2
- 15 remainder 2
- 13 remainder 4
6.True or false? 92 ÷ 7 = 13 remainder 1. Check by multiplying the quotient by 7 and adding the remainder.
TrueFalse
7.A coach has 53 children. Each taxi can take 8 children. How many taxis are needed so that every child can travel?
8.The bus has 7 rows of seats, with 12 seats in each row. The seats are filled equally by 6 groups. How many seats does each group get? First find the total number of seats.
Spot the mistake
Use division facts to test each claim. Explain your thinking.
9.Hollie says 78 ÷ 5 = 14 remainder 8. Is Hollie correct? If not, give the correct answer and explain why the remainder must be smaller than the divisor.
10.The trip organiser has 108 snacks to share equally among 9 coaches. Work out how many snacks each coach receives. Then check your answer by multiplying.
