8-Bar Musical Composition

Plan, notate and perform an original 8-bar piece. Imagine your music is the theme for a cycling race: it should have a clear beat, a memorable melody and a strong finish. Work with a partner or small group, using voices, classroom instruments or body percussion. Each bar has 4 steady beats.

Build the musical plan

Use these building blocks as ideas, or invent your own. Chords: C, F and G7. Xylophone notes: C, D, E, G and A. Rhythm symbols: ♩ = one beat, ♪♪ = two even sounds in one beat, and rest = silence for one beat.

1.A piece has 8 bars with 4 beats in each bar. How many beats are there altogether?
2.Choose a chord pattern for your cycling race theme. Which pattern gives a satisfying sense of arrival at the end?
  • C | F | C | G7 | C | F | G7 | C
  • C | C | C | C | C | C | C | C
  • F | F | F | F | F | F | F | F
3.Make a four-beat percussion pattern using the symbols ♩ (one sound), ♪♪ (two quick sounds) and rest (silence). Write one symbol for each beat. Example: ♩ | ♪♪ | rest | ♩
4.Which instrument could play the steady beat while the xylophone plays the melody?
  • A hand drum
  • A triangle playing irregular sounds with no steady pulse
  • A xylophone playing the same notes as the melody

Compose and perform

Use the grid to plan a melody. Put one note or a rest in each beat box. A dash can show that a note continues. Keep the rhythm readable and make your pattern add up to 4 beats in every bar. Then practise the whole piece and perform it twice: once softly and once with a clear, confident finish.

Bar 1 Beat 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Bar 2 Beat 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Bar 3 Beat 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Bar 4 Beat 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Bar 5 Beat 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Bar 6 Beat 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Bar 7 Beat 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Bar 8 Beat 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

5.Add a dynamic plan: mark at least two bars p (soft) and at least two bars f (loud). Which bars will be soft, and which will be loud?
6.Your group has a xylophone, a hand drum and a shaker. Assign a musical job to each instrument so the parts work together.
7.During rehearsal, the percussion starts rushing ahead of the melody. Name one practical way the group can get back in time together.
8.Reflect after performing: describe one part that worked well and one specific change you would try in a second performance.
