Body Systems Reading Comprehension

Human body systems diagram

🫁 Part 1: Reading Passage

Read the following passage about human body systems carefully:

The Amazing Human Body Systems

The human body is made up of several interconnected systems that work together to keep us alive and healthy. Three of the most important systems are the respiratory, circulatory, and digestive systems.

The respiratory system includes the lungs, nose, and airways. Its main job is to bring oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide. When you breathe in, oxygen travels through your nose or mouth, down your throat, and into your lungs. The oxygen then enters your bloodstream, whilst carbon dioxide is breathed out as waste.

The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The heart acts like a pump, pushing blood through blood vessels called arteries and veins. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to every cell in your body. It also picks up waste products and carries them away. Your heart beats about 100,000 times per day!

The digestive system breaks down the food you eat into nutrients your body can use. It includes your mouth, stomach, and intestines. When you eat, your teeth break down food, your stomach uses acid to dissolve it further, and your intestines absorb the nutrients. These nutrients give you energy and help your body grow and repair itself.

All these systems work together. For example, when you exercise, your respiratory system works harder to get more oxygen, your circulatory system pumps blood faster to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, and your digestive system provides the energy your muscles need to move.

📝 Part 2: Vocabulary Check

1. Match each body system with its main function:
1. Respiratory System
2. Circulatory System
3. Digestive System
A. Breaks down food into nutrients
B. Brings oxygen in and removes carbon dioxide
C. Pumps blood around the body
2. Fill in the blanks with the correct vocabulary words:

The ________ acts like a pump in the circulatory system. Blood carries ________ and nutrients to every cell. The ________ use acid to break down food. When you breathe in, ________ enters your bloodstream.
