Christmas Truce 1914
The truce in context
In December 1914, the First World War had been fought for several months. British and German troops faced one another in trenches on the Western Front. Between some opposing trenches lay a dangerous stretch of exposed ground. There was no single, official Christmas Truce across the whole front. In some places, during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, soldiers heard carols sung from the other side. Some exchanged greetings, food or small gifts, and some met on the exposed ground between the trenches. In a number of areas, soldiers buried the dead together. Accounts of football games exist, but they do not show that a match took place everywhere—or that all soldiers took part. The meetings were local and temporary. Fighting continued elsewhere, and the truce did not end the war. Senior commanders generally opposed informal truces and later took steps to prevent a repeat. Soldiers who met could still be enemies the next day.
- A centrally organised truce that covered the entire Western Front
- A series of local, temporary pauses and meetings in some areas
- A peace agreement that ended the First World War
- A planned celebration attended only by British soldiers
- Exchanging greetings or small gifts
- Holding a formal peace conference
- Burying the dead together
- Agreeing to end the war
Investigate the evidence
A British soldier writing home described a meeting: “We exchanged greetings and talked for a little while. It was strange to speak with men we had been fighting.” This is a short, fictionalised classroom source based on the kinds of personal accounts historians study; it is not a quotation from a named soldier.
