Aotearoa Adventure Gear is planning a weekend sale. Use percentages to check discounts, compare prices and make sensible decisions. Show your working where asked; money answers are in dollars.

Warm-up: percentage sense

Percent means “out of 100”. Use equivalent fractions and decimals where helpful.

1.The shop has 240 drink bottles in stock. Find 10% of 240, then use that result to find 5% of 240. Show how the two percentages are related.

2.A rain jacket costs $80 before a sale. What is 25% of $80? Choose the correct value.

3.A pair of walking shoes is reduced from $120 by 15%. Calculate the discount and the sale price. Show your working.

4.The shop marks a $60 backpack up by 20 before a promotion. Does “up by 20” mean a $20 increase or a 20% increase? Rewrite it as a clear statement, then calculate the new price if the increase is 20%.

5.Work out the sale price of each item in the table. Show at least one calculation.

6.Which item has the greatest percentage discount? Explain how you know, comparing the thermal top’s $18 discount with its original price.

7.A customer buys the $150 waterproof pack with 30% off and then uses a further 10% discount on the reduced price. What is the final price? Is this the same as taking 40% off the original price? Explain briefly.

Explain and investigate

Use the percentage bar to picture the whole and the part. The shaded amount is 35%.

8.Write 35% as a fraction out of 100 and as a decimal. Then simplify the fraction.

9.A hiking group has 80 members. 35% bring a packed lunch. How many members bring a packed lunch? Use the bar to help explain your calculation.

10.After a 20% discount, a tent costs $144. What was its original price? Show how you work backwards from the sale price.

11.True or false: increasing a price by 10% and then decreasing the new price by 10% brings it back to the original price. Test the claim using an original price of $200 and state the final price.
