Mass and Temperature Measurement
A group is planning a safe overnight trip near Aoraki/Mount Cook. Use the measurements and clues on this sheet to check their gear, food and weather. Show working, and always include units.
Part A: Choose and read measurements
1.For each item, choose the more sensible unit to record its mass: a) a muesli bar, b) a full hiking pack, c) a small bag of trail mix.
2.A scale reads 2.35 kg for a pack. Write this mass in grams.
3.The group packs 1.8 kg of oats and 650 g of dried fruit. What is their combined mass in kilograms?
4.One hiker says, “My pack is 4,250 g, so it weighs more than a 4 kg pack.” Is the hiker correct? Explain using a conversion.
Part B: Temperature check
5.The hut thermometer shows −2°C at dawn, 4°C at lunchtime and 11°C in the afternoon. Which reading is the coldest, and which is the warmest?
6.How many degrees did the temperature rise from dawn to lunchtime?
7.At lunchtime, the air is 4°C. A water bottle is 9°C colder than the air. What is the bottle’s temperature?
8.A thermometer is left in a mug of hot chocolate. Its reading changes from 68°C to 62°C, then to 59°C over several minutes. What is happening, and why should you wait before recording the final temperature?
9.For each situation, name a suitable instrument and unit: a) checking the mass of flour for a recipe, b) checking the temperature of soup before serving.
10.The scale reads 120 g before anything is placed on it. What should you do before weighing the trail mix, and what measurement problem does this prevent?
11.A trip plan says to keep chilled food at or below 5°C. A cooler measures 7°C. By how many degrees must it cool to meet the limit?
12.Explain one important difference between mass and temperature. Give a suitable unit for each.
