Mastering Bearings Worksheet
Bearings use North as the reference direction and are written as three digits followed by °. Use a ruler and calculator where helpful. Give distances to 3 significant figures and bearings to the nearest degree unless a question says otherwise.
Bearings and direction
Check your compass skills before plotting a route.
1.A surveyor walks from a marker on a bearing of 128°. From which direction is the bearing measured?
- Clockwise from North
- Anticlockwise from North
- Clockwise from East
- Anticlockwise from South
2.A walking route has a bearing of 7°. Rewrite this bearing using the standard three-digit format.
3.A boat sails from harbour A to buoy B on a bearing of 238°. Find the bearing from buoy B back to harbour A.
4.A rescue team records two directions from its base: 315° and 042°. Find the smaller angle between these directions.
Plotting and calculating routes
Resolve each journey into north–south and east–west components where useful. Take east and north as positive directions.
5.A drone flies 12 km from point A on a bearing of 060°. Calculate its eastward and northward displacement components, to 3 significant figures.
6.A research vessel travels 12 km from A to B on a bearing of 060°. It then travels 9 km from B to C on a bearing of 150°. Calculate the straight-line distance AC and the bearing of C from A. Give the distance to 3 significant figures and the bearing to the nearest degree.
7.A lighthouse is 8 km due north of a harbour. A sailing boat is 6 km due east of the lighthouse. Find the distance from the harbour to the boat and the bearing of the boat from the harbour.
8.A hilltop radio mast is 5 km from a campsite on a bearing of 120°. Find the bearing from the radio mast back to the campsite. Then state the distance on the return journey.
9.True or false? A bearing of 270° points due west. Explain how you know.
10.A search helicopter leaves a base and flies 10 km on a bearing of 045°, then 10 km on a bearing of 135°. Find its final distance and bearing from the base.
