NZ Government Reading Comprehension

New Zealand Parliament Building

📖 Reading Passage: New Zealand's Government

New Zealand is a democracy, which means the people choose their leaders by voting. Our government has three main parts that work together to run the country.

The Parliament is where laws are made. It meets in Wellington, our capital city, in a building called the Beehive because of its round shape. Members of Parliament (MPs) are elected by New Zealand citizens every three years. The political party with the most MPs forms the government.

The Prime Minister is the leader of the government and the most important person in New Zealand politics. They make big decisions about how to run the country and represent New Zealand when meeting with leaders from other countries.

New Zealand also has a Governor-General who represents the King of England. The Governor-General signs new laws to make them official, but they usually follow the advice of the Prime Minister and Parliament.

Local councils look after smaller areas like cities and towns. They take care of things like parks, libraries, rubbish collection, and local roads.
