Partitioning Numbers for Subtraction

Help Levi and Ari check passenger counts on a city bus route. Use partitioning to subtract tens and ones, or split a number into friendly parts. Show your thinking where asked.

1.The bus has 68 passengers recorded across several stops. Partition 68 into tens and ones: 68 = tens + ones.

2.At a stop, 52 passengers get off a bus that had 87 passengers. Work out 87 − 52 by partitioning 52 into 50 and 2. Show each step.

3.Start at 74 and subtract 31. Use the number line to show a jump back of 30, then a jump back of 1. What number do you land on?

4.Ari calculates 63 − 28. Which partition of 28 makes it easy to subtract to the nearest ten first?

5.Work out 61 − 27 by partitioning 27 into 20 and 7. If subtracting 7 from the ones is tricky, break 7 into 1 and 6 to reach a friendly ten first.
