Practical Measurement Applications

A community garden in Aotearoa is being planned. Solve each measurement problem, include units in your answers, and show your working where space is provided.

Plan the garden

Use the dimensions and information stated in Questions 1–4 to answer those questions.

1.The garden boundary is 12 m long and 8 m wide. How many metres of edging are needed to go all the way around it?
2.Each garden bed is 4 m by 2 m. What is the total area of the two beds?
3.The beds will be filled with compost to a depth of 0.25 m. Calculate the total volume of compost needed for both beds.
4.A supplier sells compost in 40 L bags. There are 1,000 L in 1 m³. How many whole bags must the garden team buy to fill both beds?

Choose tools and check units

Make sensible choices and explain your measurement thinking.

5.The path between the beds is 1 m wide. Which tool is most suitable for checking this width accurately?
  • Kitchen scales
  • A 5 m tape measure
  • A protractor
  • A measuring jug
6.The plan uses a scale of 1 cm to represent 2 m. On the plan, the 12 m garden length should measure how many centimetres?
7.A rainwater tank is a cylinder with radius 0.5 m and height 1.2 m. Using π ≈ 3.14, estimate its volume. Give your answer to 2 decimal places.

Measure, compare, improve

Use the drawing space to plan a useful improvement, then reason about the measurements.

8.The garden team has 42 m of edging. The boundary needs 40 m. How much edging will remain?
9.A triangular shade sail has a base of 4.8 m and a perpendicular height of 3.5 m. Find its area.
10.A volunteer estimates the garden is 100 m². Using the garden's length and width stated in Question 1, calculate the actual total area and decide whether the estimate is reasonable.
11.You can add one rectangular herb patch inside the garden, measuring 3 m by 1.5 m. Draw and label it in the space provided. Then calculate its area and the perimeter of edging needed around it.
