Choose a Strategy
Estimate where asked, then calculate accurately.
5.In four tennis matches, a player won sets with these scores: 6–3, 7–5, 6–2 and 6–4. Add the games won by both players across the four sets. Show how partitioning the numbers helps you add.
6.A netball team scored 42, 56, 37, 64, 48 and 35 goals in six matches. First estimate the total by rounding each score to the nearest ten. Then calculate the exact total and say how far your estimate is from it.
Create and Extend
Use addition to make sense of sports scores and points.
7.Invent a sports story that uses at least four numbers to describe scores, points or achievements. Write an addition question and solve it, showing your working.
