Stone Age Artefact Cards

Meet the objects left behind by people in Stone Age Britain. Read each artefact card, then use the clues to solve the questions. Remember: an artefact can give us clues, but it may not tell us everything.
Read the cards. These objects come from different parts of the Stone Age, which lasted for a very long time.

FLINT HANDAXE Made by chipping a piece of flint to make a sharp edge. People could use it to cut or chop. The shape and sharp edge show that its maker planned how to shape the stone.

FLINT SCRAPER A small flint tool with a sharp edge. People used scrapers to work animal skins. This is a clue that people made useful things from the animals they hunted.

CLAY POT Some people in the later Stone Age made pots from clay. Pots could hold food or water. A pot is evidence that people knew how to shape and bake clay.

GRINDING STONES People rubbed or pressed seeds and grains between stones to crush them. The powder could be mixed with water to make food. These stones are a clue that some communities grew crops.

CARVED BONE POINT People shaped animal bone into useful objects, such as points or tools. Bone does not always survive in the ground, so archaeologists do not find every object people used.

OCHRE Ochre is a coloured earth that can be rubbed into powder. People used it to make colour. A piece of ochre is a clue that colour may have mattered to people, though one object cannot tell us exactly why.
