📖 Read the Story: A Day at Piha Beach

Jake and Emma were excited about their family trip to Piha Beach. It was a hot summer day in Auckland. The temperature was 28°C. Perfect weather for swimming!

Before they left the car, Dad reminded them about water safety rules. "Always swim between the flags," he said. "The lifeguards put them there to keep you safe."

Emma spotted the red and yellow flags immediately. They were about 50 metres apart on the black sand. Between the flags, families were playing in the waves. Outside the flags, the water looked rougher.

"Why can't we swim over there?" Jake pointed to the rocks at the end of the beach.

"Those rocks are dangerous," Mum explained. "The waves crash hard against them. People can get hurt."

The family set up their picnic near the lifeguard tower. Emma noticed the lifeguards watching the water carefully. One lifeguard was using binoculars. Another was talking on a radio.

When they were ready to swim, Dad made sure they put on sunscreen first. "The sun reflects off the water," he said. "You can get burnt quickly at the beach."

In the water, Jake and Emma stayed close to their parents. The waves were bigger than they expected! Emma felt the strong current trying to pull her sideways.

"If you ever feel unsafe, raise your hand and call for help," Dad reminded them. "The lifeguards are here to help everyone."

After an hour of swimming, they took a break. They drank water and had some fruit. "Swimming makes you tired," Mum said. "It's important to rest."

When they went back in the water, Emma noticed storm clouds forming. Soon, the lifeguards blew their whistles. Everyone had to get out of the water.

"Lightning and water don't mix," the lifeguard explained to Jake and Emma. "We keep everyone safe by closing the beach during storms."

The family packed up and headed home. They had learned important water safety lessons and had a great day at Piha Beach.
