When the War Started

World War 1 began in 1914. Australia was still a young nation, only 13 years old. When Britain declared war on Germany, Australia automatically joined the war too. Many young Australian men volunteered to fight for their country. They were called the ANZAC forces - Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

The Gallipoli Campaign

In 1915, Australian soldiers fought at Gallipoli in Turkey. This battle became very famous in Australian history. The soldiers showed great courage and mateship, even though the battle was very difficult. Many brave Australians lost their lives at Gallipoli. We remember them every year on ANZAC Day, 25th April.

Conscription Debate

As the war continued, fewer men volunteered to fight. The government asked Australians to vote on conscription - forcing men to join the army. Australians voted 'No' twice. This meant Australia only sent volunteers to fight, not forced soldiers.

Indigenous Australians and the War

Many Indigenous Australians wanted to help in the war, but the government often said no because of unfair laws. However, some Indigenous soldiers did serve and fought bravely for Australia, even though they faced discrimination at home.

Life at Home

People in Australia worked hard to support the war. Women took on new jobs in factories and farms. Families grew vegetables and saved money to help the war effort. Everyone had to be careful with food and supplies.
