Australia Pre-1788 Overview
📖 Short Reading
For at least 65,000 years Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples lived across the Australian continent and islands. Many different language groups developed strong connections to specific places known as Country. These connections included spiritual beliefs, kinship systems, ceremony, laws and responsibilities for caring for land and water. People used skilled knowledge to manage environments — for example, controlled burning (often called fire-stick farming), seasonal movement for food, fishing, and trading items between groups. Art, song and stories recorded history and laws. This long history and rich culture existed well before European ships arrived in 1788.
