The War Begins (1914)

World War 1 started in 1914 when Britain declared war on Germany. Because Australia was part of the British Empire, we automatically joined the war too. Many young Australian men were excited to fight for their country and the Empire. They thought the war would be over quickly, but it lasted four long years.

ANZAC - A New Fighting Force

Australian and New Zealand soldiers joined together to form a special group called ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps). These brave men sailed across the ocean to fight in different countries. The ANZAC soldiers became famous for their courage, loyalty, and mateship during the war.

Gallipoli - The Famous Battle

On 25th April 1915, ANZAC soldiers landed at Gallipoli in Turkey. This battle was meant to be quick, but it turned into eight months of terrible fighting. Many Australian soldiers died, but they showed incredible bravery. Even though we didn't win at Gallipoli, this day became very important to Australians. We now celebrate ANZAC Day every 25th April to remember these heroes.

Conscription - A Big Argument

As the war continued, fewer men wanted to join the army. The government asked Australians to vote on conscription - forcing men to become soldiers. Families and friends argued about this idea. In the end, Australians voted 'No' twice, so men could still choose whether to fight or not.

Indigenous Australians in the War

Many Indigenous Australians wanted to fight for their country, but the government often said no because of unfair laws. However, some Indigenous soldiers did serve bravely in the war. Sadly, when they returned home, they still faced discrimination and weren't treated as equal citizens.

Life at Home

While men fought overseas, women took on new jobs in factories, farms, and offices. Everyone at home had to save food and money to help the war effort. Children collected items like metal and paper to be recycled for the war.

The War Ends

World War 1 finally ended on 11th November 1918. Australia lost about 60,000 soldiers, and many more were injured. The war changed Australia forever, making us more independent and proud of our own identity, separate from Britain.
