Character Analysis Role-Play

Read the original scene below. Then use evidence from the scene to analyse the characters and prepare a short role-play. There is no single correct interpretation: support your ideas with details from the text.

The Last Bus

Rain rattled against the windows of the community hall. The last bus to the coast was due in ten minutes, and the junior surf team still had to carry its boards across town. Arjun checked the team list for the third time. “If we leave now, everyone gets there,” she said. She tucked the list into her jacket, even though the paper was already soaked. “You keep saying that,” said Jai. He was turning a snapped fin over in his hands. “But the trailer’s stuck, and we’re missing a board. We should call it off.” Arjun glanced at the younger surfers waiting by the door. “They’ve practised for weeks. I’m not sending them home without trying.” Jai’s jaw tightened. “And if someone gets hurt because you wouldn’t listen?” For a moment, Arjun said nothing. Then she put down the team list and picked up the broken fin. “You’re right about the risk. I should have checked the gear earlier.” Jai looked surprised. “So what now?” “Your call,” Arjun said. “You know the equipment better than I do. Can you help me work out what’s safe? If it isn’t, I’ll tell everyone myself.” Jai examined the fin, then pointed to a spare board leaning beside the door. “We can use that one. But we’ll need to move quickly.” Arjun nodded and turned to the team. “We’re going together, and nobody carries a board alone.” Outside, the rain was still falling, but the team began to move.

  • Careless and uninterested
  • Determined, but initially overconfident
  • Shy and unwilling to lead
  • Amused by the delay
2.What does Jai’s action of turning the snapped fin over in his hands suggest about his priorities? Give one inference and evidence.
3.Arjun says, “I’m not sending them home without trying.” What does this reveal about what motivates her? Explain how her motivation could be both a strength and a weakness.
4.True or false: Jai is mainly concerned that the team will miss the bus. Correct the statement if it is false.
TrueFalse
5.Find a short quotation showing that Arjun accepts responsibility. Explain what her words reveal about her character.
6.How does the relationship between Arjun and Jai change from the argument to the end of the scene? Use two details to support your answer.

Prepare the role-play

Take the role of Arjun or Jai. Base your performance on the scene, but you may make a reasonable choice about what the character thinks or feels.

7.In role as Arjun, respond to Jai’s question, “So what now?” Write two or three lines of dialogue that show Arjun’s feelings and how she has changed her approach.
8.Choose a tone and one piece of body language for Jai when he says, “And if someone gets hurt because you wouldn’t listen?” Explain how each choice communicates his feelings.
9.Imagine Arjun had ignored Jai and sent the team out anyway. Write one line Jai might say and one stage direction showing his reaction. Keep both consistent with his character.
10.After rehearsing, explain one insight you gained by speaking as your chosen character. Refer to a detail from the scene that shaped your interpretation.
