Emotions and Expression Worksheet

Explore how emotions can be recognised and communicated. There may be more than one reasonable way to express an emotion.

Recognising Emotions

Emotion words: joyful, disappointed, frustrated, startled, worried, eager, self-conscious, pleased, uneasy and relaxed.

1.Choose three words from the list. For each one, describe a body sensation that someone might experience. People can experience emotions differently.
2.Which cues could suggest that a person is frustrated? Select all that may apply; none of these cues proves exactly how someone feels.
  • A tense jaw or tightly held hands
  • A relaxed face and easy posture
  • A sharp voice or frown
  • Stepping away to take a breath
  • A broad smile while speaking warmly
3.A classmate is sharing something upsetting. Which response is most likely to show that you are listening?
  • Keep checking messages while they speak.
  • Face them, listen without interrupting and use a calm expression.
  • Tell them they should not feel that way.
  • Change the subject to a story about yourself.
4.Draw a face that could show uneasiness. Add two labels to facial features that help communicate the feeling. Remember that expressions can differ from person to person.

Expressing Emotions Respectfully

Think about words, tone and body language when responding to each situation.

5.A new student arrives at your group activity and seems unsure where to go. Write one welcoming thing you could say and describe one action or expression that could help them feel included.
6.You put considerable effort into an assignment but received feedback that disappointed you. Complete both sentence starters to explain your feeling and make a respectful request: “I feel disappointed because …” and “Could you please …?”
7.You and a friend want to choose different activities at lunchtime. Which reply expresses frustration respectfully and suggests a way forward?
  • “You always ruin everything. Do what I want!”
  • “I’m frustrated that we can’t agree. Could we take turns choosing?”
  • Say nothing and refuse to speak to them for the rest of the day.
  • Agree to anything, then complain about it later.

Reflect and Plan

Reflect on the ideas in this worksheet. You may keep personal experiences private and use an imagined example instead.

8.Which emotion word from the list would you find most comfortable expressing in an activity, and what makes it comfortable for you?
9.Describe one way a person's body language or facial expression might give a clue about their feelings.
10.How might expressing a feeling clearly and respectfully help in an everyday situation? Give an example, real or imagined.
11.Choose the statement that best describes how confident you currently feel expressing emotions to other people.
  • I am still learning and would like support.
  • I can do it sometimes, but I need more practice.
  • I usually feel comfortable expressing myself.
  • I feel confident expressing myself in most situations.
12.Set one realistic goal for practising clear, respectful emotional expression this week.
