Estimate and Measure Worksheet

Help plan a picnic by estimating and measuring everyday items. Use a ruler or tape measure for length, kitchen scales for mass, and a measuring jug for capacity. Write units with every measurement. If you cannot access an item or tool, use the measurement data stated in the questions.

Start with sensible estimates

Look at the picnic items. Make a sensible estimate before measuring. Record both values, then work out how far apart they are.

1.Estimate the length of a typical drink bottle, then measure one if available. Record your estimate and measurement in centimetres. Example item data if you cannot measure: bottle length 24 cm.
2.A lunchbox is 18 cm long. Which estimate is closest: 2 cm, 20 cm or 2 m? Explain briefly.
3.A picnic blanket is 1.5 m long. Write this length in centimetres.

Choose the right unit

A good measurement uses a suitable unit and tool. Remember: 1 kg = 1,000 g and 1 L = 1,000 mL.

4.Choose the best unit to measure the mass of one apple: grams (g) or kilograms (kg)? Name a suitable tool too.
5.A full drink bottle holds 750 mL. How many millilitres short of 1 L is it?
6.Match each picnic measurement to a sensible unit: blanket length; bag mass; juice capacity. Choose from cm, kg and L.
  • Blanket length
  • Bag mass
  • Juice capacity
  • kg
  • cm
  • L

Estimate, measure and compare

Use the data or measure real items if available. For comparison, find the difference between your estimate and the measurement.

7.Zach estimates that a picnic bag has a mass of 3 kg. The scales show 2.4 kg. Was the estimate too high or too low, and by how much?
8.The measuring jug shows 600 mL of cordial. How much more cordial is needed to make 1 L?
9.A tape measure is better than a 15 cm ruler for measuring a picnic table that is 120 cm long. True or false? Explain why.
10.Plan a quick measuring investigation: choose one safe picnic item, estimate its length, mass or capacity, then measure it. Name the item, estimate with a unit, measurement with a unit, tool used, and whether your estimate was close.
