Fairy Tale Reflection Worksheet

Read the original fairy tale excerpt, then complete the questions. Use evidence from the passage to support your ideas. Open responses can have more than one reasonable answer.

The Bell Beneath the Bridge

Long ago, when the hills still whispered to the clouds, a village stood beside a river that never froze. Each winter, a silver bell rang beneath the old stone bridge. The villagers believed it kept the river from flooding. One year, the bell fell silent. Dark water climbed the riverbanks, and the village council promised a chest of gold to anyone who could find the cause. Tahnee, a clever apprentice mapmaker, volunteered. She packed a lantern, a coil of rope and a small loaf of bread. Under the bridge, Tahnee found a door no taller than her knee. It opened when she said, “A promise kept is a light in the dark.” Inside, a water spirit guarded the bell. “I will return it,” said the spirit, “if someone gives up something precious without expecting a reward.” Tahnee looked at her map. It showed every path she had explored with her grandfather, who had taught her to read the land. The map was precious to her. She placed it beside the bell. The spirit studied her face, then handed the bell back. “You offered it freely,” the spirit said. “That is enough.” When Tahnee rang the bell, the river settled. The villagers offered her the gold, but she asked them to repair the bridge instead. From then on, the bell rang whenever the river began to rise—and the village remembered that wisdom could be worth more than treasure.

Notice the fairy-tale craft

Answer using details from the excerpt. When a question asks for your interpretation, explain your reasoning.

1.Which detail most clearly establishes a fairy-tale setting?
  • Tahnee packs a loaf of bread.
  • The hills whisper to the clouds.
  • The village has a council.
  • Tahnee studies a map.
2.At the beginning, what do the villagers believe the silver bell does?
3.Identify two fairy-tale conventions in the excerpt. Give a specific example of each.
4.Why is Tahnee a more interesting hero than someone who simply accepts the promised gold? Support your answer with evidence.
5.The spirit says, “I will return it… if someone gives up something precious without expecting a reward.” What does this test reveal about Tahnee?
6.What mood does the phrase “Dark water climbed the riverbanks” create? Explain how the verb “climbed” contributes to that mood.
7.Choose the best statement of the story’s message.
  • A clever person should always work alone.
  • A reward is the only fair reason to help others.
  • Wisdom and generosity can matter more than wealth.
  • Old maps are more useful than bridges.
8.The story begins with a problem, sends Tahnee on a quest, gives her a test and ends with the village safer. How does this sequence help the reader follow the story?
9.Fairy tales often end with a lesson. In your own words, what lesson does this story suggest? Include one event from the excerpt that supports your idea.
10.Imagine the story continued. Write a short final paragraph in which the village uses what it learned from Tahnee. Keep the fairy-tale tone and include one magical detail.
Draw one object from the tale that represents its message. Add a label explaining what the object symbolises.
