📚 Part 1: Fraction Facts

A fraction shows equal parts of a whole. The numerator is the top number. It tells us how many parts are being counted. The denominator is the bottom number. It tells us how many equal parts make the whole.

A proper fraction has a numerator smaller than its denominator, such as 3/4. Its value is less than one whole. An improper fraction has a numerator equal to or greater than its denominator, such as 5/4. Its value is one whole or more. A mixed number has a whole number and a proper fraction, such as 1 1/4.
