📚 Understanding Fractions

What is a fraction?

A fraction shows part of a whole. It's written like this: numerator/denominator

Numerator (top number) = How many parts you have

Denominator (bottom number) = How many equal parts the whole is divided into

Example: In 3/8 of a pizza, you have 3 slices out of 8 total slices

🔄 Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions look different but show the same amount!

Example: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 (they're all half!)

How to find equivalent fractions:

Multiply (or divide) both the numerator AND denominator by the same number

Example: 1/3 × 2/2 = 2/6

➕ Adding Fractions

Rule: You can only add fractions when the denominators are the same!

Same denominators: Add the numerators, keep the denominator

Example: 2/7 + 3/7 = 5/7

Different denominators: Make them the same first using equivalent fractions

Example: 1/2 + 1/4 = 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4
