🟡 Version 1 — Emerging Readers

As you read, look for the names of the children and the things they put on the tray.

Today is Mother's Day. Alexa and Arthur want to make Mum happy. They go to the kitchen. Alexa gets a cup. She puts tea in the cup. Arthur gets a plate. He puts toast on the plate. They put the cup and the plate on a big tray. They walk to Mum's room. "Happy Mother's Day, Mum!" they say. Mum smiles. She is very happy.

🟠 Version 2 — Developing Readers

As you read, think about how Alexa and Arthur prepared the tray and why they did it.

It was Mother's Day and Alexa and Arthur wanted to do something special for their mum. Early in the morning, they crept quietly into the kitchen so they wouldn't wake her up. Alexa carefully made a cup of tea, while Arthur buttered two slices of toast and placed them neatly on a plate. They also added a small bunch of flowers from the garden. Together, they carried the heavy tray down the hallway and knocked softly on Mum's bedroom door. When she opened it, her eyes lit up with surprise and joy.

🌈 Extension Activity: Imagine you are Alexa or Arthur. Write a short Mother's Day card message to go with the tray. Use your best descriptive words!

🔴 Version 3 — Fluent Readers

As you read, think about the feelings of the characters and the choices they made to show they care.

The morning light had barely crept through the curtains when Alexa and Arthur slipped out of their beds. It was Mother's Day, and they had been planning this surprise all week. Moving as quietly as shadows, they tiptoed into the kitchen and got to work. Alexa boiled the kettle and brewed a pot of chamomile tea — Mum's favourite — while Arthur carefully buttered two slices of wholegrain toast and arranged them on the good china plate. They tucked a handwritten card between the flowers they had picked from the garden the evening before, making sure every detail was just right. As they carried the tray down the hallway, their hearts beat fast with excitement. When their mum opened the door, still sleepy-eyed, she looked at the tray and then at her children. Her eyes filled with tears — the happy kind. "This," she whispered, "is the best Mother's Day ever."

🌈 Extension Activity: Write an extra paragraph that continues the story. What happens next at breakfast? How do the children feel? Use descriptive language and dialogue.

🎨 Hands-On Tray Challenge: Work in a small group. Each person picks one item to add to a pretend Mother's Day tray. Write or draw your item on a card, then arrange all the cards together on a large coloured sheet of paper to make a group tray display!
